The Sacrament of Holy Communion
First Communion Classes help prepare for the Sacrament of Holy Communion. They are open to 3rd Graders and their parents, as well as students in Grades 4-5-6 who may not have had an opportunity to participate in a First Communion class and their parents.
The 2016 First Communion Classes for 3rd Graders and any students new to COL who have not been a part of a Communion Class will be held on three consecutive Thursdays: May 5, 12 &19 from 6:30-7:45 p.m.
The 2016 First Communion Celebrations will be held May 21-22 at the family's choice of service: Saturday at 5:00 p.m. or Sunday at 8:30 a.m. or 10:45 a.m.
Our First Communion Classes are fun and interactive! We use a large group/small group format designed for a parent and child to experience together. We ask that one parent attend class with the child each week. There is child care available for siblings. Below are the agendas for our classes.
WEEK ONE: Thursday, May 5 (6:30-7:45 pm) Starting the Family Chalice:
WEEK TWO: Thursday, May 12 (6:30-7:45 pm) Painting the Family Chalice:
WEEK THREE: Thursday, May 19 (6:30-7:45 pm) Baking Communion Bread:
- Each student will need to bring a medium sized plastic mixing bowl and large mixing spoon for baking bread.
ACOLYTE TRAINING: Everyone who participates in the First Communion class will be trained to be an acolyte worship helper during the 3-week class. After the training you will decide when you are ready to be put into the schedule. You will receive more information on this during the first class on Thursday, April 30.
INVITE BAPTISMAL SPONSORS! The celebration of a child's First Communion is a significant faith event. You are encouraged to invite your child's baptismal sponsors to be present to celebrate this milestone with them.
NOTE: On the day of your child's First Communion, your child, family and guests will be served communion first. We will use the communion bread baked in class and the chalice your child has designed as a part of the service.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jo Ann Tomm (email@example.com), Pastor John (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Pastor Sherrie (email@example.com). We look forward to sharing this very special sacrament with your family!
